April’s taxable sales year-over-year comparison for Utah is positive for the first month in over two years. April’s taxable sales are 4% higher than April 2009. This is the first time the same month comparison is positive since March 2008. Another sign that we are on the road to recovery. Why are statewide sales up? A lot of it has to do with a slight recovery with motor vehicle sales. Here is a breakdown of April’s comparison for some of the large sectors:

  • Motor vehicle sales — up 7%
  • Wholesale durables — up 12%
  • Retail restaurants — up 6.6%
  • Electric and gas — up 10%

There are still a few sectors lagging a bit, so not everything is positive:

  • Retail general merchandise (largest sector) — down 7%
  • Retail building and gardening — down 7%
  • Retail miscellaneous — down 5%
